A Word About Pop-Ups

  1. What are Pop-ups?
    • Pop-up windows, or pop-ups, are windows that appear automatically without your permission. They vary in size but usually don't cover the whole screen. Some pop-ups open on top of your current browser window, while others appear underneath.
  2. Browser Control
    • All browsers give you some control over pop-up windows. Unfortunately, the level of control also differs from browser to browser. To complicate things, not all pop-up windows are bad and some browsers even treat new windows as pop-ups. All of these things can lead to a frustrating browsing experience.
    • If certain links are not functioning, try setting your pop-up blocker to a less restrictive level. Or, set your browser to notify you when it blocks a pop-up window. The notification will often give you the option of allowing the pop-up now, never or always.
    • To find out how to effectively control pop-ups in your particular browser, visit your browser’s “Help” menu and search for “pop-up.”
  3. Remember
    • Blocking pop-ups may interfere with some web sites:
      • Some websites, including many financial sites, use pop-ups for important features. Blocking all pop-ups disables such features. To allow specific websites to use pop-ups, while blocking all others, you can usually add specific websites to a list of allowed sites.
    • Blocking pop-ups doesn't always work:
      • Although browsers can block most pop-ups, some websites may show pop-ups using unknown methods, even when blocked.

Broken Bookmarks or Favorites

Web pages frequently get deleted or moved. If one of your Favorites (Internet Explorer) or Bookmarks (Firefox) generates an error page, try the following:

  1. Visit another page on the same site to see if it is a website server issue. If so, try the site again later.
  2. Visit the main site that links to your bookmark and check to make sure that the address hasn't changed.
  3. If it has, just delete your current bookmark and add the new one to your Favorites or Bookmarks list.

A Bit More Advanced

  1. What kind of Internet connection are you using?
    • Cable
    • DSL
    • Dial-up
    • Other
  2. Do you use a router or firewall?
  3. How long has the problem been occurring?
  4. How old is your computer?
  5. Have you installed any new software lately?
  6. When you start your computer, shut down your computer, or launch your browser, do you receive any error messages?
  7. Are you connected to a network of any kind? Do you connect to the Internet through a firewall or proxy server of any type?
  8. Do other people use your computer?
    • It's natural for people to try different settings. Sometimes changing things has unintended consequences - Default settings are a good place to start over.
    • Reset your default Privacy and Security settings.
