Suggestions for Safe Computing

In the past few years, the level of online fraud has increased dramatically. While online banking is considered to be as safe as in-branch or ATM banking, you should be extremely careful about providing personal financial information over the Internet.

Below is a list of recommendations you can use to avoid becoming a victim of these scams:

  1. Familiarize yourself with how our site looks and functions. If anything seems odd call 1-888-842-8883.
  2. Be suspicious of email received from someone you don’t know.
  3. Be suspicious of any email with urgent requests for personal financial information.
  4. Phishers typically include upsetting or exciting (but false) statements in their emails to get people to react immediately.
  5. Phishing emails typically are not as personalized and may contain spelling and grammatical errors. Valid messages from your bank or legitimate online retailers are usually accurate in spelling, grammar and syntax.
  6. Do not complete forms in email messages that ask for personal information. Only communicate information such as credit card numbers or account information via a secure website or the telephone.
  7. Do not click on a link embedded within any potentially suspicious email. Always access your accounts by opening a new browser and typing in the entire URL into the address bar.
  8. Users should not download attachments, software updates or applications via an email link.
  9. Call your financial institution to verify the account status before divulging information purportedly needed to keep their account out of jeopardy.
  10. Sending email is not a secure means of communication. Never include account or personal information in an unsecured email transmission.
  11. Always ensure that you’re using a secure website when submitting credit card or other sensitive information via your Web browser.
  12. A secure website can be identified by checking the beginning of the Web address in your browser's address bar - it should be "https" rather than just "http".
  13. Regularly log into your online accounts and review your profile and transaction histories. Don't wait longer than 30 days before you check each account.
  14. Regularly check your bank, credit and debit card statements to ensure that all transactions are legitimate. If anything is suspicious, contact your bank and all card issuers.
  15. Change online user IDs frequently.
  16. Select unique passwords and change them every 30 days. Use separate passwords for each online account so that if one is stolen, it will not provide access to the others.
  17. Use the most current versions of browsers, anti-virus software and operating systems. Be sure that you have the latest software security patches and updates applied.
  18. Use anti-virus and intrusion detection software combining proactive and reactive detection systems. Update anti-virus software weekly to help deter email viruses.
  19. Install a personal firewall. This precaution will prevent a hacker from entering your computer through an unprotected communication port and modifying the system.
  20. Frequently update the software installed on your computer or have automatic update systems enabled to ensure there are no vulnerabilities that can be exploited in order to launch these kinds of attacks.
  21. Use an internet service provider that offers built-in virus detection and spam blocking capability.
